San Juanico & Beyond: February 27th - March 3rd, 2025
I’d like to thank everyone for being patient for this blog to come out. Sorry I couldn’t get stuff out last week. I still have a lingering cough from whatever I had.
Anyway, we left Isla Coronados & got to sail & motor-sail to San Juanico. It was a pretty fun day! And we do love San Juanico. -It’s definitely on the top 10 of the Gulf of California anchorages. Glad we could visit it one last time!
San Juanico
Matt’s successful catch!
Aaaah, the cute little village of San Sebatian…. It’s beautiful & very different from all the other places we’ve been to in the Gulf of California but it’s just not a great place to anchor.
We knew that we had to put a stern anchor out in this tiny bay so that we wouldn’t sway over into the shallow water on each side with rocks underneath. Apparently there used to be a lot more sand covering the rocks here & that make it a good spot for one boat to anchor in. However, that sand is mostly gone & the bottom is more of a rocky one. So it’s a bit tricky to find a spot where the anchor will hold.
We discovered this when we went to shore to explore. So cute. A bunch of bungalows nestled in this cove. We met a couple who owned one of the bungalows & we were talking to them on the beach. -When all of a sudden, Matt turned around to look at the boat & it was drifting quite a lot! So we say goodbye to our new friends quickly & got in the dinghy & got to MerSea to find that the stern anchor didn’t hold. Disaster was averted & Matt reset it but we decided to set a second anchor off of the bow. We almost thought it might just be better if we did a night sail to Santo Domingo then instead of waiting until morning. We decided against this as we were pretty tired & thought that the anchors would probably hold through the night.
So, Matt set an anchor alarm. I think I set one too & we tired to get some sleep during the night. Very happy when morning came & we were still in the same spot. But we knew we need to get out of there quickly. -The swell was coming in & can easily uplift an anchor.
Unfortunately, San Sebastian isn’t a good spot for sailors. But it would be neat to check out if you were driving in Baja. Glad we got to see it but would not do it again. -Knowing what we know now.
San Sebastian
Beautiful locations & stressful situations. It’s why we’re doing it now rather than 20 years from now. Although we’ve met people well into their 80’s who have been doing this quite a while! Crazy! But I guess after a certain amount of years you get more knowledgeable on how to handle all sorts of situations.
New video up. So wish that we could show our harrowing experience of our boat starting to drift but filming is the last thing to do during a crisis. Better to prevent disaster than to film content! 😄
Uh, Sir, we’re going to have to cut you off. Do you want me to call a cab for you?
Thanks for reading & watching!
