Field Trips From Puerto Escondido: January 21st - 23rd, 2025

We make our way back to Puerto Escondido to get out of the way of big wind, once again! This time we were put in the back marina - called Marina Chico. It’s a little bit more of a walk to all of the amenities but it’s also much more protected. Although, if your draft is more than 6” you are probably out of luck. It’s a very shallow area. I hold my breath while watching our depth meter go to 3”!

Unfortunately we were told that we would have to check in with the Port Captain in Loreto. Yes, there is a new Port Captain in town & he’s quite in love with his power. -Or so it seems. There is no marina in Loreto. And the only way to get there is either by renting a car or getting taxi to get up there. Kind of a silly requirement. I guess things around Puerto Escondido are going to change in 2025!

Anyway, we decided to rent a car, for $75 a day, & take ourselves up to Loreto. We got to the Port Captain’s office & it didn’t seem like such a big deal. They didn’t charge us anything. They didn’t give a reason for their change in policy. It was easy. -Which was nice. I think we wanted more fanfare for making the effort & spending money to get there!

Day In Loreto

The next day, we took advantage of still having a car. We decided to go take a look at the mission & olive grove up in the hills in San Javier. There’s a population there of 200 people. There is actually water there!

The mission is huge! Reminded me a little bit of Toledo in Spain. There is a small museum in part of it. And an 11 yr old boy & his 7 year old sister gave us a tour of the place. Very cute! He took his job very seriously. I don’t think he quite got Matt’s humor. He spoke English incredibly well! The really funny thing is that after the tour I took their picture & we gave them a tip. And when we went to the restaurant to eat lunch right after, we saw them at the little store beside it getting candy & chips with their tips. Matt really wanted to have a little talk with them to teach them about investing. But he held back.

It was very fun for us to have a car for a few days to be able to explore more land type of things! I’m sure we will want to do a bit of this next season when we’re on mainland Mexico!
